The Listening Balcony
Reactivated in 2024, the Listening Balcony offers a breathtaking view of today's international sound creation landscape.
A Hörspiel (literally "listening game"). A miniature sound piece that contains a whole world of impressions and perceptions. Its author, Bernadette Johnson, lives in Basel (Switzerland). She is the author of sound pieces for radio and other listening spaces. She has received several awards, including the Phonurgia Nova Awards, the Forum für Klanglandschaft, and the Karl Sczuka Award. Her sound work focuses on the aura of sounds. "In Disturbed Waltz," she explains, "I use three waltz themes, as well as fragments of the voices of public figures. An automated voice gives dance instructions. These bursts of voice intertwine to form a complex structure. The fundamental idea is to immerse the listener in a world of ambivalence and ambiguous feelings, a mixture of familiarity and strangeness.
"A sonic, musical, mischievous, and cheeky piece, awarded a prestigious Phonurgia Nova Award in 2023."
